If you’ve tried to figure out how to change your last name after marriage in colorado in the State of Colorado, you might be feeling frustrated by how confusing the process can be. The brides I chat with share how it can be a struggle.
So I’m going to simplify it in a few seconds for you, here’s all you need to do:
Quick Checklist: How To Change Your Last Name After Marriage In Colorado
1. Get a marriage license (by going to the Clerk and Recorder’s Office of the county where you’ll wed).
2. Using the doc above, Get a new social security card (by calling 1-800-772-1213).
3. Using the doc above, Get a new driver’s license from the Colorado State Division of Motor Vehicles (by calling 303-205-5600).
4. Go down the line: change voter registration, etc.

5. Update your voter registration information.
6. Update your motor vehicle registration and/or title (by going to https://www.colorado.gov/dmv to learn more).
7. Let your employer know about the change so he or she can update tax, benefit, and payroll information.

Important Name Change Limits

Please note: Colorado Driver’s License Offices can only make changes to your last name with a certified marriage/civil union license. Foreign marriage certificates are not accepted.
They cannot change your first name without a court order, and your name MUST match your Social Security card.
The following options are allowed on your driver’s license or ID:
• Replace current last name with spouse’s last name. If your spouse’s last name is two names, you may use
all or part of the last name.
• Add your maiden name to your existing middle name with the original middle name being placed first,
and use your spouse’s last name.
• Add your spouse’s last name to your existing middle name with the original middle name being placed
first, and retain your maiden surname.

• Add your spouse’s last name to your maiden name using a space or hyphen.
• Add your maiden name in place of your existing middle name.
